What's Microsoft doing to fix their Windows Update? Corrupted my file "ntoskrnl.exe"? Computer won't restart !

I have a Windows XP notebook computer. While answering email the other day, I got an "Automatic Windows Update" from "Microsoft". I allowed the update, and then the "restart". The problem is, that when the computer tried to restart, it went black...and then a DOS page opened, saying,

"%26lt;Windows root%26gt;/system 32/ntoskrnl.exe Please reinstall a copy of the above file".

WHAT DID MICROSOFT DO TO MY COMPUTER??? Since the " Windows Update" download, I CAN NOT RESTART MY SYSTEM ! Does anyone know what MICROSOFT is doing to fix this problem they created. My computer was running perfect, prior to the download. I now have a $1500.00 notebook computer that is DEAD, for all practical purposes! People are screaming about this exact issue, all over the internet (message boards, chat rooms, and the like). I'll eagerly await your reply. My attorney has been informed, and also awaits, same reply. Thank you for your understanding in this matter...

Sincerely, Edward Clements

Well, I just did a Yahoo! search on ntoskrnl.exe and, while I found a ton of references, none of them seemed to reflect a recent problem. Could you post a reference to one so we can see what's developed?

Thanks.
Reply:The Windows update may not be the problem. Most likely causes for your problem are:

- bad sectors on hard drive due to various reasons

- hard drive going bad

- virus on your system

Essentially, computer are like cars - they need to be maintained. There are several ways to fix this problem, however, these are not quick fixes you could do yourself - if you chose not to lose all your files.
