Can I install Microsoft Office on Windows XP? I already have Microsoft Works?

I need to do some coursework on Microsoft Excel, but I don't have it on my computer. I am thinking of purchasing Microsoft Office software, but can I install this on my laptop with XP, where I already have Microsoft Works installed?
