Does Microsoft now make the best operating system out there for PC's?

I think so because:

1) Microsoft OS is universal

2) Microsoft do good products of other software

3) It has a the bells and whistles

4) It don't crash like the earlier Win 95-98 did

5) Windows Explorer does the job no need for Firefox

Do you think I am wrong in any of my reasoning I am sure some of you do. But with computer power increased and better OS I don't see the need for something different.

Maybe if Microsoft was a bit more freely giving of their source code so other software developers could make their products run better on windows might be my only objection I can think of.

Does Microsoft now make the best operating system out there for PC's?
Nope, Apple does. :D

Well you can't actually compare Windows to any other OS, cos most people are within their comfort zone in using Windows. I mean, cmon, do you think the average Windows user would have the time and skill to try out other OS? This leads to more and more softwares to be built for windows (cos that's where the money's at), and not much for any other OS. So in a way, yeah, windows is universal.

Microsoft has a good product line up? In terms of MS Office, maybe, I dunno. Cos I'm also within the Windows comfort zone for that matter (I rarely compare the "office" program from other software companies) :D. But the best softwares (for me) comes from outside of microsoft. I use a lot of graphic, web, and sound design softwares, none of them from Microsoft.

Bells and whistles? Yeah, they offer lots of features to the customer as plusses but are not really indispensable for the device to work... like... the calculator... and... windows color theme... and classic or XP start menu... :D. If you want lots of extra features, check out iLife on a Mac... (yep, overexposed to Mac adds... T-T)

And whaddaya mean it doesn't crash? Windows crash everytime, it's almost a routine. (But maybe it's cos I used too many applications on my PC, some of 'em are bound to coflict with the OS... :P, still, you won't find that problem on a Mac).

Finally, Windows Explorer, eh? A programmer friend of mine said to me a while ago that most internet virus are manufactured to "work" with IE (cos most windows user still uses IE)? So I'm sticking with Firefox. And it sure took a long time for windows to follow Firefox's steps in putting several tabs within one window in a browser. (Dunno if Firefox started the trend though)

You know what's sad though? I'm still using windows for some of my work cos of that comfort zone. Damn you Gates!
Reply:Fair enough, heheh, my first computer was a PC using a Windows 3.1.1. Ah, the good old days, where you can't tell if the OS sucks or not, cos u have nothing to compare it to. :) Report It

Reply:It depends on what you doing with your computer.
Reply:Unix/Linux still is more stable, more secure (what Windows calls security, Linux users call "Friggin Duh"), and has some powerful features that Windows has yet to recreate.

However, Windows is getting closer to the line in stability and secure design, not to mention the APIs used to program windows applications are becoming less clumbsy.

Furthermore, Windows is easy to use from XP onward because it is naturally a (semi-)well organized graphical interface, and automates a lot of stuff such as hardware detection and network setup. The upcoming Windows Vista has a beautiful and intuitive user interface and even better hardware support and more applications for doing things that many home users like to do.

In the end, I believe Windows is definately the best operating system for home users, many office professionals, and those who just want to use their PC for entertainment and information purposes. For secure servers and mainframes however, Linux remains the obvious choice.
Reply:Microsoft is not really universal I read that in Eurpoe linux is gaining more populaty. I have a mac and run linux on another computer. I do run windows to test some win32 api but thats not important. Microsoft has lots of secuity holes and with out the source code people can not change it. BTW IE is like the worst browser out there thats my opionion. There is a need for firefox and others. If Microsoft did not have competion they would start gettin less intersted and start making a worser software becuase it would be the only thing on the market. It is cruical we have other OS's. BTW webtech people dont use windows to run their websites they use linux/unix becasue they are more secure. Sometimes IE does not do the job. People can deveolp plugin ins for fire fox and so can you which can come in handy. Windows does still crash not as often as they used to back in the 95 era but they still do. try doing tons of work and then us windows just crashing on you and then giving you a warning that you need to re-install windows that happened to me luckly i backed up.

2) Microsoft do good products of other software

if i understand you correctly MS has good software for it becuase more people use it. some developers are not going to waste more time to port their code over to another system when they know they wont get as much moeny as they do when devleoping on windows.

I neither hate nor love windows it just comes usefull sometimes
Reply:too proprietary.
Reply:This is almost like a religious argument... I'm sure you'll get flamed by Linux and Mac lovers.
Reply:although i am currently using xp i personally feel that mac is way better though i think vista will be revolutionary. the problem with windows is that it has to many complications and errors while processing and is too... well its tough to explain but its too ordinary. mac beats windows at appearance and speed although winodws may run many more applications i feel ie sucks like hell. its slow and ads keep popping up. it also doesnt have all the fancy plugins, themes and extensions that firefox has, most of windowsa default inbuilt softwares like excel etc may be good but they have limited features and also winodws graphics support is not good.

thats what i feel.
