Is Microsoft's bid for Yahoo! a wise one?

Microsoft has pounced on slumping Internet icon Yahoo with an unsolicited takeover offer of $44.6 billion in its boldest bid yet to challenge Google's dominance of the lucrative online search and advertising markets.

With its profits steadily sliding, Yahoo's stock slipped to a four-year low earlier this week and a new management team has been trying to steer a turnaround but sees more turbulence through 2008.

Wouldn't it have been smarter for Microsoft to expand into these markets rather than buying a faltering company for far more than it's worth?

Is Microsoft's bid for Yahoo! a wise one?
gee i hope the good people at Y!'s top are reading what their people (this) have to say about this proposed takeover....IT IS A BAD IDEA.....and this is why:

first off MS is OS/browser crazed. they will do anything in time to make "the new yahoo" more functional by using their browser and OS ONLY and then google wins anyway.

MS is not an altruistic company. there is so much new cool stuff that needs to be invented and little cool things that other smaller portals have achieved. yahoo is behaving like there is no new innovation. i mean it sounds like yahoo is giving up. to this end i would serve a plea to its stockholders by saying, "we should hang in there" little longer.

such is the problem of going public. stay private for the long haul but yahoo can't do that because it is already public.

rather i see yahoo combining its forces with small innovative portals and build a better for pay Mail Plus. i am a paying customer and i love all the features.

remembers the early daz of ureach.com. they had that facility to directly upload data and make it available to the public or limited access. i thought that was very cool. in fact ureach offers some really nice services now that would work well will yahoo.

then how about a browser based OS. there is so much to be accomplished there as well. perhaps a piece of yahoo can get it together with Canonical and embrace Ubuntu? so maybe Yahoo can be a GM of portals and take under its wing some innovations.

to yahoo people i say if you just want to sell out then just do it. but if you still interested in Yahoo then i say for everyone to go to the beach this weekend and have a picnic and take deep breath......see what happens monday.
Reply:Their running scared of Google.

The 'Monolopy %26amp; Mergers Committee' will have something to say about this one I'd expect.
Reply:I guess, to give an abbreviated answer, it is a good idea to work with something that already has solid foundations than to try to build something from scratch.
Reply:i think it would be unwise for yahoo to accept it. all yahoo needs is some restructuring and some new ideas to compete effectively with google. after all, yahoo has been around the longest and has a tremendous customer base that is hardcore when it comes to loyalty to yahoo. if microsoft gets their way, and redoes the yahoo site and services to "microsoft" services, i know personally i'll be moving to google myself. i am one of those VERY loyal yahoo users that will boycott the new corporation if it happens that way.
